Sub Mission on Agriculture Mechanization (SMAM)

    Sub mission on agricultural mechanisation
    • Date : 01/01/2016 -

The Sub Mission on Agricultural Mechanization Scheme is being operated by the Government of India under the National Technical and Extension Mission since the year 2014-15 on 90 percent central share and 10 percent state share. All types of agricultural machines are included in the scheme, which are in demand as per local requirements. In the state, special attention is being paid to the establishment of Farm Machinery Banks in hilly areas and Custom Hiring Centres in plain areas so that along with access to agricultural machinery in remote areas, women labour can be reduced. By establishing Farm Machinery Bank (FMB) and Custom Hiring Centre (CHC) farmers are getting agricultural machinery as per their local requirement at low cost. In the hilly areas of the state, farm power is 0.5 kilowatt per hectare, whereas in the plains it is about 3 kilowatt per hectare. The average farm power in the hilly areas is quite low. Due to small and scattered holdings and terraced fields in the hilly areas, the use of modern large agricultural machinery is not possible.

    Objectives of the scheme-

    • To increase the reach of agricultural mechanization among small and marginal farmers.
    • To establish custom hiring centers where small farmers can also get agricultural machinery at low prices.
    • Establishing farm machinery bank so that all agricultural equipment can be made available to marginal, small farmers and even remote areas.
    • Preparing a group of all types of agricultural equipment.
    • Making farmers aware about agricultural mechanization through demonstration, capacity development and training.
