Introduction
The organizational set up of agriculture in India started with the Department of Revenue and Agriculture and commerce in 1871 during the period of Lord Mayo (Governor- General of India). Department of agriculture was established in year 1875. In the beginning, the work of this department was limited to collection of data and establishment of model farms. In 1880, the department was affiliated with land record department. After passing government of India act 1919, Agriculture department came under the jurisdiction of state government as a result of which independent Department of Agriculture, Uttar Pradesh came into existence on 1st.December, 1919 and it was formally established on 1st may 1920. In view of the special geographical nature of the state, in order to give impetus to the state, the Agriculture Department of Uttar Pradesh used to recruit personnel of the Agriculture Department in the hilly areas under the Hill Cadre. After separation from Uttar Pradesh on 9th November, 2000, the Agriculture Department, Uttaranchal was reorganized several times. By the Agriculture and Agricultural Marketing Section, Government of Uttaranchal GO No. 956/Agriculture-1(41)/2002/Dated 2nd August 2003, 2609 posts were created in the Department. Thereafter, on 01 January 2007, the name of the state was changed to Uttarakhand instead of Uttaranchal. Single window system was implemented in the Agriculture Department, Uttarakhand by Agriculture and Agricultural Marketing Section-1, Government of Uttarakhand, GO No. 481/Dated-28 May 2010. Along with creation of 2489 posts in the department, change of name of designation and determination of work responsibilities were also done. Since then department was on its way to encourage food and nutritional security for ever increasing population in the State.
