The basic concept of food security is to ensure that all people have access to basic food for their active and healthy life at all times. There is a growing pressure on food resources due to increasing urbanization. In view of the stagnant food grain production and increasing population, the Government of India launched a centrally sponsored scheme in 2007 to increase the production of rice, wheat and pulses, based on the recommendation of the Agriculture Sub-Committee of the National Development Council. In the selected districts of Uttarakhand state, the Food and Nutrition Security then National Food Security Mission Scheme was started from the year 2012-13 with the objective of expanding the area and increasing productivity on a continuous basis, restoring soil fertility and providing employment opportunities. This programme is being run in selected districts for paddy, wheat and nutritious cereals and in all the districts for coarse cereals, pulses and oilseeds.

    Objectives of the Mission:

    • To increase the total production of rice, wheat, coarse cereals, nutritious cereals, pulses, oilseeds and sugarcane by running area expansion and productivity enhancement programs in the identified districts.
    • Restoring soil fertility and productivity on individual farms.
