Organic and Natural Farming

Organic farming is completely helpful in increasing soil fertility and farmers’ productivity. Organic farming method is even more profitable in rainfed areas. Farming using organic method not only reduces the cost of production but also increases the income of farmers and makes organic products more competitive in the international market. As a result, farmers can get more profit than normal production. In modern times, due to continuously increasing population, environmental pollution, conservation of soil fertility and human health, the path of organic farming is very beneficial. For the all-round development of human life, it is absolutely necessary that natural resources should not be polluted, the environment should be pure and nutritious food should be available. For this, we will have to adopt the agricultural methods of organic farming which will be able to provide food items to all the people without polluting our natural resources and human environment and will be able to show us the path to a happy life.
Main objectives of organic farming program-
- To produce high quality food items in large quantities.
- Proper use of natural resources.
- To accelerate the biological cycle by using plants and animals.
- Maintaining soil health and long-term fertility of the soil.
- Avoidance of all pollution caused by agricultural techniques.
- To provide maximum production to the farmers along with a safe environment.
Since the year 2009-10, the organic farming program is being operated under the National Agricultural Development Scheme. At present, organic farming programs are being run under the following centrally funded schemes:
Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna -Raftar
Under this scheme, organic certification is being done by the Agriculture Department and Uttarakhand Organic Products Council under third party certification. This project has been started from the year 2017-18. In this, assistance is provided by 01-01 Master Trainer for carrying out and training of organic works in each development block. Construction of vermicompost pit/Nadep pit, training, exposure visit, marketing and certification of organic products etc. are being done in the project.
Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojna-P.K.V.Y.
Under this scheme, the program is being run in 3900 clusters in the first and second phase, in which work is being done by Agriculture, Uttarakhand Organic Products Council, Horticulture, Aromatic Plants Center and Silk Department. Cluster formation, seminar, training, exposure visit, marketing of organic products and PGS certification etc. are being done in the project.
Cleanliness Action Plan “Namami Gange Clean Campaign”
The main objective of this scheme run by the Government of India is to encourage organic agriculture under PGS certification in the gram panchayats located on the Ganga basin selected on the basis of cluster approach. This scheme is funded at 90 percent central share and 10 percent state share. Under the scheme, farmer training on organic farming and exposure tour programs are being organized for the farmers and financial assistance is being provided for PGS certification, distribution of organic inputs, marketing of organic products, brand building, fairs, exhibitions, publicity and participation in local fairs and national fairs.
National Mission on Natural Farming
The objective of natural farming is to bring the cost of production to almost zero. There is no need for expensive inputs like fertilizers, pesticides and intensive irrigation in this method. At a time when chemical-intensive farming is resulting in soil and environment degradation, the zero-input eco-friendly farming method is certainly an exemplary initiative.
